I have a strange sound coming from the front end of my 2000 Chevy Malibu. What could it be????

I believe it is coming from the front end and it sounds like a ratcheting noise. I was thinking the CV joints on the axles but the boots seem to be in good shape with no leakage and it doesn't have to be turning to make the noise, just going down the road.
