Is my dvd beyond repair?
Beleive it or not scratches on the play side surface are not as serious as they look. But, it appears the scratches that you are able to see are deep and thus that is what's cauisng the freezing. The image pits on a CD or DVD are deep and that's why fingerprints on a disk will cause more problems than surface scratches as the dirt from a finger print will actually rest on the data pits of a disk. If you scratch the label side of a disk, more damage will occur. getting back to your problem. try wiping the play side with a non-abrasive cloth such as a kleenex or something. if there are still playback issues, then yes, your disk is damaged....toothpaste does nothing for the deep scratches.
