Open vs endoscopic surgery – how much less fluid removed for equivalent procedure?
For the most part an open procedure uses suction more often than laparoscopic procedures. The trend is towards more minimally invasive surgery. The amount of fluid depends on the type of case. You should actually stratify your cases by type i.e. General Surgery vs Orthopedic surgery vs OB/Gyn and General surgery may end up using suction cannisters a bit more, in terms of cannister use, you should further stratify by case i.e open colorectal cases use more suction due to increased irrigation. The laparoscopic procedures tend to have less blood loss and as such are less prone to the use of irrigation and thus the use of cannisters. So, focus your efforts more on open surgery in particular colorectal or bowel cases and you will best be able to direct your sales.
